Is same-sex marriage still legal?
What changed
Same-sex marriage is legal in every state. In November 2025, the Supreme Court declined to hear a case that asked it to overturn its 2015 ruling. A 2022 federal law, the Respect for Marriage Act, requires every state to recognize a marriage that was legal where it took place.
