Looking Up Attorney Disciplinary Records

Before you hire an attorney, it’s important to look into their law license, background, qualifications, and disciplinary status.

Search Your Attorney’s Disciplinary History and Status

  • Ensure that your attorney is in good standing
  • Review your lawyer’s historical disciplinary record
  • See for what violations, if any, your attorney was reprimanded
Please note:
  • Ensure you spell the attorney’s name correctly, and try any variations of their name.
  • If your attorney practices in multiple states, be sure to check their Disciplinary Records in each state in which they are licensed.
  • Please be aware that many states remove records of attorney disciplinary actions after a certain number of years, or allow for a disciplinary procedure to be expunged from the public records.
  • Please be aware that many state disciplinary agencies discipline lawyers who are located in other states, even if those lawyers are not licensed to practice in that agency’s particular state.
  • Most states admonish lawyers privately as well as publicly. Private reprimands will not be found in public discipline records. Similarly, complaints filed by consumers against attorneys are generally not made public, just public disciplinary actions.
