Roughly a month ago Mary Williams posted a negative review about this law firm and she too was an ARAG member, an insurance company for legal matters. The DeVries firm was one of the firms that ARAG recommended. They had rave reviews for the most part with just a couple of negative reviews and I figured Mary’s review was probably one of those people who complain about everything, that is until my experience.

I reached out to DeVries Law through their online chat and spoke with Monique for approximately 30 minutes our conversation ended at about 4:08 pm, and it was a very positive experience. At 4:49 pm Monique sent an email giving me a little more information on my legal needs, but I did not check my email until the next morning.Just after 10:00 am the next morning January 10th I responded to the email with my ARAG CaseAssist Confirmation # and my contact information, informing her that I had checked out their reviews and those of other firms that ARAG had recommended and had decided to retain them. Monique sent out a response at 5:45 pm that same afternoon letting me know that she had contacted ARAG and also Attorney Tyson (Josh Tyson) to seek his approval. She also informed me that Attorney Tyson was not in the office on Fridays but she would follow up with him on Monday the 13th. Since it was the weekend and she would have no information I did not respond to her until Sunday night at about 8:43 pm, with each email Monique would apologize for the delay, so I responded telling her that I didn’t feel her responses were unreasonably delayed, but thanks for your apology anyway.

On Monday January 13th at about 5:55 pm, I received a phone call from Monique informing me that Attorney Tyson felt that ARAG did not pay enough to take on my case and that he would be willing to take on the case at their full hourly rate. I informed Monique that I reached out to their firm because of the ARAG recommendation and the glowing reviews. ARAG also offers a discounted rate for charges they do not cover but this discounted rate was not offered. I informed Monique that I would be looking for another lawyer and informing ARAG that this particular law firm was not honoring their agreement. This felt almost like a bait and switch.

Shawn DeVries advertises that he had previous experience in the hospitality industry and that “Once I had earned my J.D., I decided to create a new law firm that would be based on principles I learned from the hospitality industry. Unlike other firms, The DeVries Law Firm, P.A. would serve not clients but guests.” Guess what, I did not feel like a guest, I didn’t even feel like a client, I felt like a mark. My early interactions with Monique, was the only time I felt like a guest, she was very cordial through out our entire interaction even when I became short with my responsees after being told they would charge their full hourly rate. This review gets 2 stars because of Monique, otherwise it would be zero.
