Kevin did an amazing job helping me through what could have been an exceptionally difficult divorce. He was conscientious of my concerns and addressed my needs clearly. We had discussions about reasonable outcomes without letting emotions hamper productive communication. He had resources for neutral parties to evaluate finances and child support. Although the divorce was stressful and difficult, the process working with Kevin was exceptional. I highly recommend Kevin and the collaborative divorce process.
I hired Kevin Scudder to prepare our final affairs and draw up our last will and testament. He was very helpful and most informative in this and covered aspects of estate planning that I wouldn’t have thought of. He even sorted out end of life and power of attorney arrangements. I recommend him highly and particularly like his friendly and easy going demeanor, a pleasure to do business with.
I was shocked, but not surprised, when my wife sent me divorce papers after a year of separation. It was really tough to take it in, and even harder to figure out my next steps. I found Kevin through the person leading a support group that I was attending, who had talked about Kevin’;s skill at negotiating, at listening, and at finding solutions that worked for his clients without burning bridges or making the situation worse than it already was. When I first met with Kevin he clearly explained how he worked, including the billing (I was particularly nervous about the money because I’ve never had to hire a lawyer before). His billing was fair and reasonable – hiring a lawyer isn’t cheap, but he never overcharged me nor billed for make-work, and several times he specifically had his legal secretary do some of the work so that I would pay the legal assistant’s lower hourly rate. Throughout the process Kevin was amazing. He was incredibly professional, always responding to my questions and requests promptly and knowledgeably. He listened to what I said and valued and acted on that. He was respectful to me, my ex and her lawyer, even when he and I deeply disagreed with my ex and her attorney. He has a lot of experience in the practical details of making a divorce happen. At one point he recommended a mediator that my ex and I used to hammer out the parenting plan. The mediator was amazing and the parenting plan was good (I didn’t get everything I wanted but neither did my ex, and it’s a plan that we can all live with). On top of all that I was always reassured when I talked with Kevin. He was patient, understanding, and reassuring every time I freaked out. Every time my ex demanded something unreasonable Kevin would talk to us all (Kevin, me, my ex, her lawyer) and I’d have this feeling of “Oh thank goodness – there’s finally an adult in the room”. I didn’t get everything I wanted but I can live with the divorce agreement that I’ve got, and using the collaborative law approach spared my kids (and me!) from more trauma of going to court and dragging each other through the mud. Note: Kevin does ‘collaborative law’, meaning that he himself doesn’t take cases to court (he will be very clear about this when you first talk to him). He will recommend a different lawyer if it goes to court; this worked out fine for me – I ended up talking with a second lawyer at the start of the process (as a brief, free consultation) but I never ended up needing her. I hope I never need family-law services again, ever, but if I did I will 100% use him again. I fully and whole-heartedly recommend Kevin without reservation.
